New Arabic news channel from April 2

Dubai: A new Arabic news channel with a French perspective is due to be launched on April 2, it was announced yesterday.

The Arabic version of France’s recently launched France 24 news channel, is set to offer Arab audiences objective and independent world news coverage, say the channel’s organisers.

Google Notebook Grows Up, understands Languages

Yet another Google Labs product has made it into the real world; behold Google Notebook in its non-beta glory.  The tool has gained the ability to “speak 17 other languages besides English,” but would-be users shouldn’t expect much in the way of additional improvements.

US-based VC fund to acquire 19 % in India TV for Rs 509 million

29 March 2007: MUMBAI: Having earmarked a corpus of Rs 10 billion for investing in Indian media companies, US-based venture capital fund ComVentures is acquiring a 19.17 per cent stake in India TV’s holding company Independent News Services for $11.5 million (Rs 509.6 million).

ComVentures had earlier signed a definitive agreement with NDTV Networks Plc, UK, to invest $20 million. NDTV Networks has wholly owned subsidiary companies NDTV Imagine and NDTV Lifestyle which would launch Hindi general entertainment and lifestyle channels.

I&B Ministry bans FTV channel

March 30, 07: The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has banned satellite channel FTV for two months. The transmission or re-transmission of this channel on all platforms has been prohibited with effect from April 1, 2007 to May 30, 2007, throughout the country for showing programmes that are against good taste and decency, denigrate women and are likely to adversely affect public morality.

The ministry claims that some cable operators were transmitting/re-transmitting programmes such as ‘Midnight Hot’ wherein skimpily dressed and semi-naked models are shown. Therefore, the Government prohibited the transmission of the channel exercising powers under sub-section (2) of Section 20 of the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act, 1995.

Yahoo to offer unlimited e-mail storage

SAN FRANCISCO, Mar 28: Yahoo Inc. plans to offer unlimited e-mail storage to its roughly quarter of a billion users, starting in May, it said.

The world’s biggest e-mail service is scrapping its free e-mail storage limit of 1 gigabyte, or about a billion bytes of data, responding to explosive growth in attachment sizes as people share ever more photos, music and videos via e-mail.

Trai to explore CAS optionally in non-notified areas

March 27, 2007: Broadcast regulator Trai (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) is exploring the option of allowing voluntary implementation of conditional access system (CAS) in non-notified areas following the success achieved in notified areas of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.

It has formed a 15-member consultative panel to explore various options for implementation of CAS in non-notified areas, a Trai official said.

Kunal Dasgupta to continue as CEO of SET India following a multi-year agreement

March 27, 07: Sony Entertainment Television India has announced the signing of a multi-year agreement with Kunal Dasgupta for him to continue as CEO of the company. The announcement was made by Andy Kaplan, President, International Networks, Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI).

STAR appoints Laureen Ong as COO

Mar 27, 07: STAR has announced the appointment of Laureen Ong as its COO. She will be replacing Steve Askew, who resigned owing to personal reasons. Ong will take charge of her new assignment from June this year and will report to Paul Aiello, CEO, STAR. Ong was the founding President of with National Geographic Channel prior to this assignment.

Calling her as an accomplished media and entertainment veteran, Aiello said, “Her forward-thinking business judgment, and constant drive to grow and innovate were key factors in allowing her to build NGC from the ground up.”

US: Wired News and NewAssignment launch open newsroom

Orkut in Hindi?

After starting Google News in Hindi Google is planning to introduce its social networking site Orkut in Indian languages. Hope they will replicate Google News in other Indian Languages too.

 

Google also intends to launch in India a mobile version of Orkut which will allow users to post messages to their friends online through SMS.

Google is developing with local vendors a simpler search engine, as well as content tailored to the needs of rural users.
