No news on FM channels for the time being: I&B

October 9, 2006

Government is dilly dallying of the issue of news on FM Channels. During the first quarter of 2006, the I&B ministry had given an in-principle approval to news on private FM stations and it was expected that the final approval would come by October.

Now the ministry feels that the FM stations have the capability to earn revenues even without news and current affairs and there was no pressing need to provide this service. Interestingly the ministry believes it does not have the resources to monitor news across the country on 24 hour FM channels, which are spread over 91 cities over 300 FM stations.
